Choose Paklenica for a day centred on walking and canyon scenery, Krka for waterfalls and a river landscape, or Kornati for a boat excursion among islands. These are not interchangeable days out. They differ in how you move around, how transport is organised and how easily you can change plans once the day begins.
During a villa stay, first decide how many days you want to spend away from your accommodation. One well-chosen excursion can fit a family holiday more comfortably than several parks on consecutive days. Use the comparison below to match an outing to your group.
Compare the kind of day you want
| Excursion | Main experience | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Paklenica | Walking through a mountain landscape | The difficulty and length of your chosen trail |
| Krka | Waterfalls and river scenery | Your entrance, visiting route and onward transport |
| Kornati | Sailing and island scenery | Departure harbour, programme and sailing conditions |
This comparison does not establish suitability for every visitor. For children, older relatives or anyone with limited mobility, check the specific route or boat you intend to use rather than relying on a general description of the park.
If the group cannot decide, choose in this order:
- Does everyone want to spend a day on a boat? If so, compare Kornati trips first.
- Is an active walking day the priority? Choose a Paklenica trail that suits the slowest pace in the group.
- Are waterfalls the main attraction? Start with Skradinski buk at Krka and how you will reach it.
For each option compare the whole day: travel to the starting point, the visit, food, breaks and the return. A short holiday does not need all three parks.
Paklenica: choose the walk before setting out
Paklenica is known for the Velika and Mala Paklenica canyons, and a visit needs to be planned around a particular walking route. The official regional tourist board’s guide provides an introduction to the landscape and visiting options. The park’s name alone does not tell you how far you will walk or how demanding the day will be.
Agree how much time the group wants on the trail, where you intend to turn back and what equipment you need. Read the park’s current advice and check conditions before leaving. A route suitable for experienced hikers may be a poor match for guests expecting a brief sightseeing stop.
Leave time for the return journey and a rest. Reaching the furthest possible point does not need to be the aim; the chosen walk should suit the people taking it. If some friends want a more demanding day, agree a separate plan and how everyone will get back.

Krka: decide on the entrance and scope of your visit
For Skradinski buk, the park lists the Lozovac and Skradin entrances and a 1,900-metre circular educational trail. Swimming at Skradinski buk is not permitted. Check the official Krka National Park information, particularly if older photographs of swimmers inspired your trip.
Choose an entrance before buying a ticket and check how you reach your intended visiting route from it. Include transport, waiting and breaks in the day rather than counting only walking time. If you want an additional boat excursion within the park, confirm what the ticket covers and the return arrangements.
Agree the scope of the visit with your group. Some people may want the main site while others hope to add more stops. Settling that before departure is easier than extending the programme when part of the group is already tired.

Kornati: the boat programme shapes the day
For Kornati, compare specific operators and vessels. Prices, routes and departure times are set by organisers; the park publishes information about contracted excursion providers on its official tours page.
Ask which harbour you leave from, how long you spend sailing, where the stops are and what the price includes. Check shaded seating, toilet facilities and arrangements for children. Seeing Kornati in the name of an excursion does not tell you whether it visits the particular places you had in mind.
Discuss what happens if conditions change. Unlike an independent walk in town, a boat outing ties your return to the programme and the operator’s decisions. Avoid scheduling a tightly timed onward journey immediately after the expected return.
Keep a day without an excursion
After a day on a trail or boat, a slower morning at the villa may be welcome. For a shorter visit, choose one park and divide the remaining time between the coast near your villa and rest. For autumn dates, read our guide to Zadar from September to mid-November.
Villa Mary Lou can be your base for that kind of holiday. Review the rates and available inquiry dates, then arrange the excursion separately with your chosen operator or park once the travel dates are settled.
